Head of Technical Services/Librarian III

Open Date: September 2, 2021

Title/Classification: Head of Technical Services/Librarian III

Reports To: Library Director

Starting Salary: $65,034 per year

Schedule: 37.5 hours/Monday - Friday

Position Summary: The Department Head of Technical Services is responsible for the total management and operation of all aspects of the department and its integration into the overall operations of the library.

Qualifications: MLS from ALA-accredited school of library/information science; excellent oral and written communications skills, five years of progressively responsible relevant experience, including at least two years of supervising staff. Comprehensive knowledge of technical services operations and national standards. Thorough understanding of and up-to-date experience with USMARC formats, OCLC, Dewey, LCSH, and a comprehensive, integrated automated library system as SIRSI, DRA, Innovative Interfaces, etc. Proficiency in Microsoft applications a must. Must have the ability to make independent judgments, and to counsel and mentor others. Proficiency in Polish or Spanish desirable.

Responsibilities: Supervises departmental staff and manages all aspects of acquisitions, cataloging and processing of materials. Develops, documents, and implements long and short-term goals for the department. Responsible for dept. collection development and maintenance. Prepares reports and statistical analyses, makes presentations to the Director, Board, and others as required. Serves on the Director's Management Team to plan and coordinate library wide projects and programs, share information, and participate in strategic planning. Represents the Library in New Britain and the professional community.

Library Aide - Circulation

Open Date: September 28, 2021

Title/Classification: Library Aide - Circulation

Reports To: Head of Circulation

Starting Salary: $13.00 per hour

Schedule: Part-time, 9-hour per week, position. Initial schedule requirement is Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 3:00 to 6:00 or 4:00 to 7:00.

Position Summary: The Library Aide performs general circulation functions; directs public to appropriate staff, shelves materials and maintains the physical order of the collection. Reports to a supervisor appointed by the Department Head.

Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent, or junior/senior depending on maturity.

Demonstrated communication skills - both oral and written - and a proven commitment to excellent customer service.

Ability to alphabetize, use the Dewey decimal system and simple math.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, to learn quickly and work independently.

Responsibilities: Handles returned library materials and prepares them for shelving.

Directs public to appropriate staff.

Shelves and shelf-reads all types of materials.

Maintains room order: straightens, shelves, picks up materials, alerts staff to any inappropriate behavior, or unsafe situations.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular bending, stretching, stooping, pushing and pulling; lifting print and other materials, office equipment and supplies of up to 25 pounds and the ability to move a reasonable quantity of materials from place to place within or outside the Library. May require standing, sitting, and/or walking for extended periods of time.

Library Technical Assistant - Makerspace

Open Date: September 23, 2021

Title/Classification: Library Technical Assistant - Makerspace

Reports To: Head of Adult Services

Starting Salary: $17.41 per hour

Schedule: Part-time (20 hours per week)

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 1:30 - 6:30

Friday 12:00 - 5:00

Position Summary: The LTA - Makerspace is a paraprofessional who is responsible for library work for Makerspace activities. This position is cross-trained to provide services in other departments of the Library, as needed.

Qualifications: Associates degree; two years of library experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; graphic design training and/or experience. Experience providing instruction to audiences on creative activities, or visual/digital arts, including programming for different age groups.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides instruction on Makerspace equipment.
  • Troubleshoots issues with Makerspace equipment.
  • Develops and/or provides assistance for programs.
  • Collects data and provides statistical reports on Makerspace usage.
  • Schedules Makerspace time/attendees using the Library's scheduling software.
  • Manages the Makerspace "store" keeping track of inventory and payments.
  • Obtains new materials/implements new services based on knowledge of Makerspace.
  • Works with the supervisor to assess Makerspace services.
